Abstract

By studying fire imagery in texts related to the choreographic modernity in the early 20th century, both those produced by writers and those produced by dancers, we will attempt to understand, on the basis of a literary approach, what may justify the use of pyric imagery in order to describe or define the dance. Two types of flame related to dance appear in the texts, an exterior and spectacular flame which writers contemplate, and an inner flame that animates the dancers and that they can feel when they dance. By comparing these two perspectives, we will attempt to verify our hypothesis according to which these two flames are in fact one, and that it is the same phenomenon perceived differently by the dancer and the artist spectator.
