Abstract

This paper highlights the current need of innovation and contamination increasingly noticeable in Oḍissī classical dance in Orissa. The case-study “Indian Odissi Classical Dance || Ed- Sheeran. Shape of You” is referred to reflect on the relationship between the new generation of local gurus and dancers with the Oḍissī dance tradition. The outcomes of the controversial encounter between tradition and modernity are transcultural and transmedial creativity, globalization and popularization of classical dance, contemporary experimentation according to international criteria. The author observes these events from the conservative point of view of the traditional schools of Orissa, based on field experience, ethnographically oriented.
