The Chinese screendance evolved with variations in definitions and way of practices from the same art discipline emerged in the West. It came through a unique historical path of the cultural foundations of its own original references. In this paper, the author explores and examines the relevant historical elements identified and cited as the major contributors to the formation and development of the contemporary Chinese screendance through the three development phases from 1905 to 1970s. What happened in between the vision (xiang) changes and how did they impact on the artistic appearance (xing) and the development of Chinese screendance? It is a fundamental question that the author aims to present an academic view based on a research dominantly in China.
