Abstract

The paper intends to provide the philosophical coordinates to address contemporary dance from an epistemological point of view. In the first place the two main epistemes of the body that informed dance during the Twentieth Century are traced. A way of seeing and describing the body that tends to be ontologizing belongs to modern dance, while a constructivist way to the contemporary one. In a second moment the philosophies of three authors of postmodernity are presented, who have pronounced themselves in a significant way on the body, contributing to radically change its statute. These radical and innovative theories, coming from post-structuralism and feminism, would also have had significant repercussions on the choreographic aesthetics of the late Twentieth Century and beyond.
