Abstract

This article examines the Italian translations of the articles on dance published in the Encyclopédie méthodique edited by Charles-Joseph Panckoucke (1736-1798), which includes excerpts of Jean-Georges Noverre’s Lettres sur la danse. The writer Antonio Piazza (1742-1825), editor of the «Gazzetta Urbana Veneta», decided in turn to publish excerpts of articles from the Encyclopédie méthodique, including several excerpts of Noverre’s Lettres. Through this Venetian publication, the translation in Spain of Noverre’s Lettres included in the Encyclopédie méthodique, and in several French periodicals, Noverre’s ideas were disseminated in contexts that were no longer associated with the name and personage of the French theorist and choreographer.
