Susanne Franco is lecturer at the University of Salerno. Her major publications include Martha Graham, Palermo, L’Epos, 2003 (2° ed. 2006), the editing of Audruckstanz: il corpo, la danza e la critica (special issue of Biblioteca Teatrale 2006, n. 78). With Marina Nordera she edited I discorsi della danza. Parole chiave per una metodologia della ricerca, Torino, UTET Università, 2005 (ed. ingl. Dance Discourses. Keywords in Dance Research (New York-London, Routledge 2007) and Ricordanze. Memoria in movimento e coreografie della storia (Utet Università 2010). She is the editor of the book series “Dance for Word/Dance Forward. Interviste sulla coreografia contemporanea” (L’Epos) that include her volume Frédéric Flamand (2004). Her numerous essays deal with theoretical and methodological issues, the cultural role of dance, and the analysis of contemporary and modern dance performances.

Abstract

The essay examines the main theories that in recent times have transformed the archive from the object of historical and philological research to a critical issue for the humanities, interrogating its status and function. The effect of these theories on dance and performance studies is a more sophisticated set of tools to follow the traces of something traditionally ephemeral such as a live performance. A comparative analysis of the structure of archives and the modes of transmission created by the heirs who managed the tangible and intangible heritage of Pina Bauch and Merce Cunningham, both deceased in 2009, is the starting point for an inquiry into the themes of the function of memory, the processes of incorporation and their impact on the writing of (dance) history.
