Brenda Dixon Gottschild is professor emerita of Dance Studies at Temple University. In her professional life, she alternated and combined the careers of artist-performer and scholar-writer, besides working as a critic for Dance magazine. She particularly focused on African-American performance and culture in articles and books. She is the author of Digging the Africanist Presence in American Performance: Dance and Other Contexts (1996), Waltzing in the Dark: African American Vaudeville and Race Politics in the Swing Era (2000), which received the 2001 CORD Award for Outstanding Scholarly Dance Publication, and The Black Dancing Body. A Geography from Coon to Cool (2005), which received the 2004 de la Torre Bueno Prize as the year’s most distinguished book of dance scholarship. Among the various acknowledgments and grants, in 2008 she was the recipient of the Congress on Research in Dance Award for Outstanding Leadership in Dance Research.

Abstract

First Premises of an Africanist Aesthetic identifies the essential attributes of the Africanist aesthetic through a careful exemplification and in contrast with the Europeanist ballet. It is the first study ever investigating these elements in dance. Thus, it provides a seminal methodological tool both for an understanding of the distinctive precepts of African-American Dance and for the disclosure of the underground traces of this culture and aesthetics in shaping Euro-American choreographers’ work, such as George Balanchine’s ballet.
