Abstract

Without attempting to be exhaustive, this article aims to present several key aspects of the dance therapy method developed by María Fux through a reading of Danzaterapia: Vida y Transformación, a book by María José Vexenat that has never been published in Italy. In this autobiographical work the author retraces her artistic development from her time as a student and dance therapist in María Fux’s studio up through her most recent activities, hinting at the deep ties that hold her to the Maestra. Reflecting on a range of methodological themes that she nearly always “camouflages” through interior dialogue and the recounting of her lived experiences (as opposed to taking them on directly), Ms. Vexenat explains how dance therapy springs from life itself, as it derives from experiencesthat are authentically our own. Perhaps the most significant feature of the book, though, is its author’s heartfelt desire to use her personal story to bring readers into a world that will enable them to find their own. She is not interested in simply relating her life experiences, but rather in drawing on them in order to help others contemplate both their own and those of others.
