“A wish to fly” moved Trisha Brown’s impetus to dance. Combined with her mathematical mind and flexible body, it evolved into original and abstract forms of dancing. By honoring her memory, almost a year after her departure, this essay reconstructs Trisha Brown’s early works to show the ways she developed her aesthetics by negotiating between cultural and biographical issues. It also identifies the recurring principles in her compositional approach, which were clearly informed by the daring explorations of the Sixties and Seventies.
